Biography
Born in Bari in 1961, a deputy anti-mafia prosecuting magistrate, Gianrico Carofiglio made his debut in the world of fiction in 2002 with Testimone inconsapevole, followed by Ad occhi chiusi (2003), giving life to the successful character of the lawyer Mr. Guerrieri. The enthusiasm shown by readers, the growing and continuous sales success and the praise from critics made this a literary case, confirmed by its constant presence in the bestseller lists. Testimone inconsapevole, in the English translation Involuntary witness, published by Bitter Lemon Press, is to represent Italy at the prestigious 2007 Impac Dublin Literary Award. The novel Il passato è una terra straniera, with which Carofiglio won the Bancarella Prize in 2005, is soon to be a film directed by Daniele Vicari. Gianrico Carofiglio’s four novels have sold over a million copies and have been translated into many languages: Spanish, English, German, Japanese, Greek, Portuguese, Turkish and Russian. In 2007 an essay on the city of Bari will be published in Laterza’s Contromano series. Carofiglio is also writing the script for a graphic novel to be published by Rizzoli.
