Biography
Elif Shafak was born in France, in Strasburg, in 1971. She spent his adolescence in Spain before returning to Turkey. With a degree in international relations and a scholar of social sciences, she also writes for a number of daily newspapers and magazines in Turkey. The subjects she has taught at the Bilgi University in Istanbul include: Ottoman History, Cultural identities in Turkey, the relationship between female identity and writing. In 2002 she travelled for the first time to the United States and in 2004 published her first book in English, Saint of Incipient Insanities (Farrar, Straus and Giroux).
She currently teaches at the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at Tucson University in Arizona. In her courses she addresses issues linked to Literature and exile, the Policies of memory and Sexuality and gender in the Muslin world, emphasising female problems in the Middle East.
In September 2006 she was acquitted of the charge of having offended the Turkish identity in her sixth and most recent novel The bastard of Istanbul. In this book, a real literary case in Turkey, the author addresses the taboo of the Armenian situation.
