Biography
Gregory David Roberts was born in Melbourne, in Australia, in 1952. From 1972 to 1975, he was a leader in the student movement. In 1977 he accomplished his first robbery using a toy pistol. He was apprehended in 1978 and, that same year he escaped from Pentridge prison. In 1982 he travelled to Bombay, and then joined the mujhadin fighters in Afghanistan, where he was wounded in action and taken to Pakistan. In 1990 he was arrested in Frankfurt and imprisoned in a high security prison in Preungesheim. Extradited to Australia, after two years of internment and four in prison, he wrote Shantaram, a bestseller in the many countries in which it was published. The novel’s film rights have been bought by Johnny Depp.
